The Australian Government’s Commitment to Children with Disabilities in Visa Applications
In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity and fairness, the Australian Government has unveiled it’s comprehensive response to the Final Report of the Disability Royal Commission. This landmark publication outlines the government’s dedication to addressing the 222 recommendations highlighted in the report, emphasizing shared responsibilities and proactive measures.
A key aspect of this response is the government’s commitment of $12.1million to reform the Migration Health Requirement. This initiative aims to create a more equitable process for children with disabilities, ensuring that visa applications are fairer and more inclusive. This financial commitment, spread over four years from 2024 -2025, includes $5.2 million in ongoing funding. The goal is to provide special consideration for child visa applicants who are born and ordinarily resident in Australia and who live with a health condition or disability, enabling them to secure visas more easily.
Furthermore, the Department of Home Affairs has conducted a thorough review of the Migration Health Requirement. This review focused on balancing the fairness of Australia’s migration system with the need to manage public expenditure on health and community services. This initiative marks a pivotal step in acknowledging and addressing the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a more inclusive society.
